Happy Saturday, readers!

We’ve made it through the first week of 2011. Unscathed, hopefully!

I’ve got a little motivation booster for your weekend morning today. Not all fitness routines need to be an hour long or more. Not all fitness routines need to be tedious and boring. Not all fitness routines have to consist of the same old thing day in and day out. In fact, it’s better if they DON’T.

The Marines run. A lot. A real lot. But, that’s not all that they do to stay in shape. Sometimes the secret to starting your day off right is just to do a few basic calisthenics (yes, think junior high gym class!) to get your blood pumping, your metabolism amped, and your endorphins flowing for a productive, energy-filled day.

In the Marine Corps we used to do a warm up that we lovingly referred to as the “Daily 7.” I can’t say if this is still what they call it, I got out like a hundred years ago. But, the premise is simple: 7 different warm up exercises before the scheduled run. So, if your time is limited in the mornings, any variation of this will do. This can be done in 30 minutes or less, depending on how YOU decide to work it.

Pick up to 7 of your favorite old school classics: jumping jacks, pushups, crunches, leg lifts, scissor kicks, mountain climbers, hello dollies, cherry pickers, trunk twisters, 8 count body builders. (I will be MORE than happy to give you step-by-step instructions on any exercise you are not familiar with. Email me: angel@angelestep.com and tell me which ones you need. I’ll reply within 24 hours.)

Do a reasonable amount in a set. Pushups, you could do 25. Jumping jacks (side straddle hops, in Marine lingo), you could do a set of 10 4-count jacks. You get the idea. The point is to spend 2-3 minutes doing each set at 100% intensity, and then move on to the next. Don’t rest in between. And don’t go so fast that you ignore your form. If you added this daily routine to your mornings, you will burn a few extra calories, work a variety of muscle groups, and boost your metabolism for the day. Your body will thank you. And you can feel patriotic knowing that you are training like the military every single day.

Again, email me at angel@angelestep.com to get detailed instructions on the exercises you are not familiar with.

And, as always, COMMENT BELOW! Let me know if this is helpful to you, or at the very least not a ginormous waste of your time to read it.
